Tehachapi Audubon Group News May 13, 2025

Retired wildlife biologist Karen Pestana, a leading citizen scientist in the Cornell Lab of Ornithology Western Bluebird NestWatch program, led an interesting walk on Saturday, May 3.

Eleven of us started near the entrance of Brite Lake Park to check 15 Western Bluebird nest boxes that are monitored as a part of the NestWatch program. It was a fun morning as we learned the proper way to verify the status of the nests and enter that scientific data into Karen’s Log.

Friday, May 9th, Bob Barnes, Audubon California Bird Conservation Programs Director, led a guided bird walk around Tom Sawyer Lake and Brite Creek in Golden Hills Nature Park. It was a beautiful day for enjoying the outdoors and 43 bird species were identified!

Bob will lead a bird walk in Bear Valley Springs this June. Also coming up in June, Rowdy Freeland, a new Kern Audubon Society (KAS) member and part of Tehachapi Audubon Group will lead a walk at Mountain Park. See kernaudubonsociety.org for more information on these and other KAS activities.

Tehachapi Audubon’s next meeting will be August 26th, 7 p.m. at Golden Hills Elementary School. Local historian Jon Hammond will be our guest speaker. A fourth-generation Kern County resident, Jon has photographed and written about the Tehachapi area for 43 years focusing on its history, agriculture and wildlife. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear Jon.
