Costa Rica Birds
Tehachapi Audubon Group Meeting – August 25, 2026
Presenter Karen Evans
World-Class Birder & Board Member, Kern Audubon Society
Costa Rica birds will be the subject of the August 25 Tehachapi Audubon meeting. Dedicated birder Karen Evans will speak about her adventures birding in Costa Rica and present a slide show as well. She is sure to make this a fun event!
Karen taught first grade for many years and like most teachers is a life-long learner. She has been birding her entire life without considering herself a “Bird Watcher.” About nine years ago she dusted off her old bird book (a wedding present from her parents) and bought a pair of binoculars for herself and her husband Mark. They joined Kern Audubon Society in 2017. When Mark died from cancer just before his retirement in 2019, she threw herself into birding to cope with the loss.
In 2023, Karen became a Kern Audubon board member, handling membership, and quickly realized the best way to go many places with other birders was to become the Field Trip Coordinator for the group. She has expanded her scope to other counties, states and countries, traveling with Kern Audubon twice to Costa Rica, and is scheduled for a trip to Colombia in the Fall.
Karen credits mentors Teresa Connell, Bob Barnes, and Ali Sheehey for her enthusiasm in sharing her knowledge with others. She hopes to increase the number of people who notice birds and come to realize the importance of protecting them and the natural environment in which they thrive.
